Female Enrollment in Higher Education Jumps 2.07 Crore, AISHE Releases Report

AISHE Releases GER 2021-2022: The All India Survey of Higher Education (AISHE) released a Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) report for the year 2021 to 2022 on Thursday, 25 January 2024.

As per the reports, it was seen that higher education in India has experienced a prominent increase in enrollment status, establishment of new institutes, and improved student-teacher ratio since 2014-15.

The main part that was highlighted in the report was that more women candidates have engaged in higher education than men in various undergraduate and postgraduate programs. 

Dharmendra Pradhan, Education Minister of India, said in a Twitter post “Through PM Narendra Modi’s initiative for the first time the women have outnumbered men in 5 out of 7 top UG courses”. 

Further, the Education Minister added, “Celebrating the strength and achievements of women, we are encouraged by the progress made towards gender equality and women-led development #NariShakti”.

AISHE Reports on Female Student Enrollment 

In 2022, approximately 2,06,91,792 female candidates have enrolled in higher education i.e. UG or PG courses which are estimated as 55% out of 100%, and all the students are between the age group of 18 to 23. 

Two UTs are registering GER of over 60% in Chandigarh and Puducherry and above 40% in Delhi, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, Kerela, and Telangana. 

Women’s engagement in education in states Kerala, Telangana, Haryana, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Chhatisgarh have increased by 32% since 2015-16 and 18.7% since 2016-17.

There are 10 undergraduate programs in India such as BA, BSc, B.Com, B.Ed, etc, except in engineering and commerce, female enrollment is higher in all the other programs. 

Based on the 2011 census, the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) peaked at 28.4 in both UG and PG, there are more female than male students on campus.
