In order to become a fighter pilot with Indian Air Force, candidates have to qualify for the written test, CPSS test and SSB interview.
The most popular exams for selection as an Air Force pilot is NDA and AFCAT. NDA is conducted by UPSC, whereas AFCAT is conducted by Indian Air Force.
For appearing in NDA, candidates must be passed/appeared in class 12th with PCM subjects. Registration for NDA begins in May and December every year.
For appearing in AFCAT, candidates must graduate and pass 12th with Physics & Maths. The registration commences in December & June every year.
After passing the written test candidates will have to go through the SSB interview process, which assesses candidates for various officer entry positions, including the Flying Branch.
The final selection is done on the basis of the candidate's performance in the SSB interview, medical fitness, and availability of vacancies.
For selection in the flying branch of IAF, candidates must have to clear the Computerized Pilot Selection System which is conducted at the time of SSB interview in AFCAT.
Candidates have only one chance in their entire lives to pass the CPSS test. A candidate cannot join the flying branch of the Indian armed forces if they fail the CPSS test.
The candidates who have cleared SSB Interview will be shortlisted as per their scores and will be called for training from their choosen branches.
Upon successful completion of training, candidates are commissioned as officers in the Indian Air Force flying branch and assigned further duties & responsibilities.
