Education Minister: Karnataka UG, PG Students Can Write Exams Both in English and Kannada, Get Details Here

Karnataka UG, PG Exam in English and Kannada: The State Higher Education Council (SHEC) decided on Wednesday that undergraduate and graduate students in Karnataka public universities can henceforth do exams in Kannada, English, or a combination of the two languages.

Students were previously required to answer every question on an exam in either Kannada or English.

However, the new choice would let them attempt some questions in Kannada and some in English as it suits them.

This change had already been included in polytechnic courses.

NEP’s Main Goal Behind Amendments

The Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Ashwath Narayan, called the SHEC’s annual general meeting, where the decision was taken.

The National Education Policy, 2020’s goal to encourage higher education in regional languages was also adopted at the meeting, the council also said that it would translate books on all topics into Kannada, as instructed by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Additionally, a high-level group was established to leverage technology in the translation process.

UGC Decides to Translate English Books into Regional Language

Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, the chairman of the UGC, met with international publishers on December 7 to discuss the translation of undergraduate English textbooks into Indian languages.

The decision was made to translate books into regional languages in order to help students in rural areas in understanding the courses.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) began translating technical texts into Indian languages last year.

The process of translating MBBS and engineering texts into various regional languages has been started in a number of states.

No New Universities for Tribal Communities

According to the minister, the committee decided to create accommodations for tribal studies at the already-existing Karnataka State Folklore University instead of creating a new university for the tribal community.

Vice chancellors and higher ranking officials should visit the institutions they manage during “good governance month” to observe how education is going. He added that money and focus for research programmes should increase.
