Himachal Pradesh CM announces fund for higher education of orphan children – The Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu has announced a fund (Rs. 101 crores) for the higher education of orphan children on Sunday.

Making the announcement, Sukhu says Congress MLAs will contribute Rs. 1 lakh each from their salary to fund. “We also request BJP Council to support the same”. He added that financial assistance will also be sought under corporate social responsibility & from philanthropists.

“The state government will bear the expense of beneficiaries’ skill development, education, higher education & vocational training. The CM said they will also be provided financial support per their needs so that they may enjoy a respectable life.

Saying that the state government was committed towards the welfare of children, women & senior citizens. Sukhu said a ‘500 festival’ grant will be given to the residents of Child care institutions, Nari seva sadans, shakti sadans & old age homes.

Remembering an incident from his school & college days, Sukhu told he has a friend who was an orphan & he used to take him home on occasion. “Once I accompanied my friend along & he told me ‘You are taking me along but where I stay there are 40 more like me’. That day I thought if I ever reach a powerful position, I will do something for orphans” he said.

Assistance from the fund would be free from govt restrictions & no income certificate would be required to avail it. However, the money will be directly transferred to the beneficiaries account by the department of social justice & empowerment.

After taking Oath as CM, he said, he visited the Girl Child Care Institute at Tutikandi to learn about their living culture. He also examined the Nari Seva Sadan & Old Age Ashram, Mashobra.
