Candidates should score at least 75% in their Class 12 board exams, with the combined scores for SC, ST, and PwD candidates being at least 65%, or they must fall among the top 20% of graduates of their respective boards, according to the JEE Advanced booklet that was recently issued.

Class 12 Scorecard Required for Admission

When candidates are selected for document verification, according to Bishnupada Mandal, organising chairman of JEE Advanced 2023 at IIT Guwahati, the 75% eligibility criteria would be taken into consideration.

At the time of document verification, they will be required to present documentation of their Class 12 score. They also have another requirement that says students must have scored in the top 20 percent of their board to be eligible, according to Mandal.

This criterion was suspended only during the Covid years, and it has now been reintroduced to give Indian board exams more weight, he explained.

Why Eligibility Cannot be 50%

Mandal responded that the reason the eligibility requirements cannot be lowered to 50% is because “(the entrance exams for admissions to IITs and NITs) are considered to be high-level exams and their students are exceptionally brilliant.”

He claimed that the reduction of the “dummy school” culture is another benefit of the 75% criterion. “There are a number of concepts that children should be aware of, and it is important that they attend school in order to learn those fundamental principles.

As students now focus more on doing well in Class 12, this will also aid in reducing the dummy school culture, he claimed.

According to V Ramgopal Rao, a former director of IIT Delhi, students’ development of their social and practical abilities is helped by their Class 12 grade.

Attending school requires completing equally important practical classes and exams. Class 12 knowledge is practical and subjective in nature, whereas JEE is objective. According to Rao, this criterion would be utilised to evaluate the general growth of the students.
