For those new to JEE Main, this is an entrance exam for undergraduate engineering and architecture courses in institutes like NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded institutes in India. Doing well here can also be your ticket to the JEE Advanced, which is the gateway to the esteemed IITs.

JEE Main Exam Pattern 2024

Before we discuss the changes (if any), let’s recap the known pattern. JEE Main had two papers – Paper 1 for B.Tech/B.E and Paper 2 for B.Arch/B.Planning. Candidates must check JEE Main Eligibility Criteria before appearing in any of these papers.

  • Paper 1 had three sections: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, each with multiple-choice questions and numerical-based questions. 
  • Paper 2 is divided between Mathematics, Aptitude Test, and Drawing Test.

After carefully reviewing NTA’s latest release, here’s the complete exam pattern for all papers of JEE Main:

JEE Main has two papers: Paper 1 for B.E/B.Tech and Paper 2 for B.Arch/B.Plan. The exam is mostly online, but the B.Arch drawing test is pen-paper based.

  • For Paper 1, there are two shifts: Morning (9 am to 12 noon) and Afternoon (3 pm to 6 pm). The time duration is 3 hours for both Paper 1 and Paper 2. For PWD candidates the time duration is 4 hours.
  • Paper 1 has objective questions, while Paper 2 has both objective and subjective questions.
  • Paper 1 has 90 questions, Paper 2A (B.Arch) has 82, and Paper 2B (B.Plan) has 105 questions.
  • You can choose from 13 languages: English, Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Punjabi, Odia, Telugu, Tamil, and Urdu.
  • For correct answers, you get +4 marks, but for wrong ones, you lose -1 mark. No marks are given for unanswered questions.

JEE Main 2024 Paper Pattern

Below we have given the distribution of marks for both Paper 1 and Paper 2:

Paper 1 (B.E/ B.Tech)

In Paper 1 Each subject will have two sections (Section A and Section B), there will be 90 Questions in total. Section A will have multiple types of questions, while Section B will have numerical value questions.

In Section B, candidates have to attempt any 5 questions out of 10

There will be negative marking for both section A and B.

Paper 1 Exam Pattern

Paper 2A (B.Arch)

In Paper 2A (B. Arch) Mathematics (Part-I) and Aptitude Test (Part-II) will be conducted in computer-based mode. However, the Drawing Test (Part-III) is pen-paper mode, where an A4-size drawing sheet will be used.

In s Part -1 Section A will have 20 MCQs questions and Section B will have 05 questions to be filled as a numerical value. There will be negative marking for both Section A and Section B.

Marking Scheme

  • For correct answer +4 marks will be given, for wrong answer -1 mark will be deducted for MCQs and numerical value questions.
  • No marks will be deducted for unanswered questions.

Time Duration

  • The time duration for the exams remains the same. Candidates get 3 hours to complete each paper. PWD candidates will be given 1 extra hour to complete the examination.
  • Candidates attempting both Paper 2A (B.Arch) and 2B (B.Planning) will be 3 hours 30 minutes to complete tests.

Language Options

The JEE Main 2024 will be available in 13 languages, similar to the previous year. This includes Hindi, English, Bengali, Gujarati, Assamese, Kannada, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Odia, and Malayalam.

Any New Changes in JEE Main 2024 Pattern?

  • As of now, there are no new changes in the exam pattern of JEE Main 2024. Candidates can assume the paper pattern will be the same as discussed in the article. If there are any new changes we will update the article.
  • NTA is likely to release the JEE Main 2024 notification in the last week of November, 2023. The application process is expected to begin in the first week of December, 2023.
