JEE Main 2023 Exam Pattern – The JEE Main 2023 Exam Pattern has been released on the NTA’s official website. Candidates who are appearing in future examinations must be aware of the exam pattern.

JEE Main 2023 (Joint Entrance Examination Main) Examination will be conducted for providing admissions to the desired aspirants in Engineering, B.planning & Architecture courses at various colleges & universities located all over the country. 

The NTA announced the JEE Main 2023 Exam Dates earlier. Accordingly, the JEE Main 2023 Examination for Session 1 will be conducted on 24th, 25th, 27th, 28th, 29th, 30th & 31st January, 2023. While the Session 2 Examination will be held on 6th, 8th, 10th, 11th & 12th April, 2023.

The exam pattern includes the examination mode, time duration, total number of questions, type of questions & many more.

Mode of Examination

The JEE Main 2023 Exam will be conducted in the following modes –

  • Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) – Online / Computer Based Test (CBT) Mode.
  • Paper 2A (B.Arch) – Online / Computer Based Test (CBT) Mode except for Drawing Section in B.Arch.
  • Paper 2B (B.Planning) – Online / Computer Based Test (CBT) Mode.

Medium of Examination

The JEE Main 2023 Exam will be conducted in 13 different languages – English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu & Urdu.

The option of language for Question Paper should be exercised while filling up the Application Form online. It can be changed at a later stage.

Time Duration of Examination

  • Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) – The total time duration for Paper 1 will be 3 hours (4 hours for PwD candidates).
  • Paper 2A (B.Arch) – Time Duration for Paper 2A will be 3 hours (4 hours for PwD candidates).
  • Paper 2B (B.Planning) – Time Duration for Paper 2B will be 3 hours (4 hours for PwD candidates).
  • For Both Paper 2A & 2B, the time duration will be 3 hours 30 minutes (4 hours 10 minutes for PwD candidates).

For 3 hours Paper, the 1st Shift will be held from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm & the second shift will be from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

For 3 hours 30 minutes Paper, the 1st Shift will be from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm & the second shift will be from 3:00 pm to 6:30 pm.

Subjects

  • Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) – Mathematics, Physics & Chemistry.
  • Paper 2A (B.Arch) – Mathematics, Aptitude Test & Drawing.
  • Paper 2B (B.Planning) – Mathematics, Aptitude Test & Planning Based Questions.

Types of Questions

  • Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) – Objective Type – Multiple Type Questions & questions for which the answer is a numerical value, with equal weightage to Mathematics, Physics & Chemistry.
  • Paper 2A (B.Arch) – Objective Type – Multiple Type Questions & questions for which the answer is a numerical value.
  • Paper 2B (B.Planning) – Objective Type – Multiple Type Questions & questions for which the answer is a numerical value.

Marking Scheme

  • Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) – 4 marks will be allotted for every correct answer & 1 mark will be deducted for any wrong attempt.
  • Paper 2A (B.Arch) – 4 marks will be allotted for every correct answer & 1 mark will be deducted for any wrong attempt.
  • Paper 2B (B.Planning) – 4 marks will be allotted for every correct answer & 1 mark will be deducted for any wrong attempt.

Method of Determining Merit

  • Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) – Conversion of the raw score in Mathematics, Physics & Chemistry & the conversion of the Total into NTA Scores. Overall merit shall be prepared by merging the NTA Score of all shifts of all days.
  • Paper 2A (B.Arch) – Conversion of the raw score in Mathematics, Aptitude Test & Drawing & Total into NTA Scores. Overall merit shall be prepared by merging the NTA Score of all shifts of all days.
  • Paper 2B (B.Planning) – Conversion of the raw score in Mathematics, Aptitude Test, Planning Based Test & Total into NTA Scores. Overall merit shall be prepared by merging the NTA Score of all shifts of all days.

Important Points to Remember

  • For Multiple Choice Questions: To answer a question, the candidates need to choose one option corresponding to the correct answer. However, if any discrepancy is found, it shall be addressed in the following manner –
    • Correct answer or the most appropriate answer: Four marks.
    • Any wrong option marked will be given minus one mark.
    • Unanswered/Marked for Review will be given no mark.
    • If more than one option is found to be correct then 4 marks will be awarded to only those who have marked any of the correct options.
    • If all options are found to be correct then 4 marks will be awarded to all those who have attempted the question.
    • If none of the options is found correct then full marks will be awarded to all candidates who have appeared irrespective of the fact whether the question has been attempted or not.
  • For Numerical Value Questions: There will be a negative marking for Section B. However, if any error is found after the verification, it shall be addressed in the following manner –
    • Correct answer: Four marks.
    • Wrong option marked: Minus one mark.
    • Unanswered/Marked for Review: No mark.
    • If a question is found to be incorrect then 4 marks will be awarded to all those who have attempted the question. The reason could be due to human error or technical error.
    • Candidates are advised to do the calculations with the constants given (if any) in the questions. The answer should be rounded off to the nearest integer.

The JEE Main 2023 Syllabus remains unchanged as the NTA has released the syllabus.

The examination will be held through online mode Computer Based Test (CBT) mode at various exam centres.
