Karnataka Education Minister’s Statement
The Prime Education Minister of Karnataka, Madhu Bangarappa stated, “To study Chapter 1, students are currently required to carry books for the entire year, which is a lot of unnecessary weight. To address this issue, we have divided the syllabus into two parts and the new order will be released in the next 10 days”.
Also, the government is planning to release alternative sources for the notebooks, considering students to carry loose notes instead of notebooks.
Minister Bangarappa highlighted that the newly proposed scheme will result in minimal expenses for parents, “This division in textbooks will reduce the size of the book by 50%, and this decision has been taken to ensure the safety of children” he added.
The Department of State Education Research and Training (DSERT) conducted a study in 2019 in which they mentioned that the weight of school bags for classes 1 and 2 must be 1.5 to 2 kg, 2 to 3 kg for classes 3 to 5, and 3 to 5 kg for classes 6 to 10.
