Kerala Government Introduced Constitution Preamble In The School Curriculum

The Kerala government recently approved 173 new textbooks for classes 1, 3, 5, 6, and 9 as a part of their school’s curriculum.

Kerala Schools Latest News: The government of Kerela on Tuesday, 16 January 2024 for the first time has included the preamble to the constitution of India in the revised textbooks in all the schools of Kerela.

The general education minister Mr. V Sivankutti who is also the chairman of state curriculum committee has said that the preamble of the constitution of the country will be included as a preface in all textbooks of classes 1, 3, 5, 6, and 9.

“The Preamble will be part of all the revised textbooks in the state. It will also be made a part of the teacher’s training and will help both teachers and students to understand the core of the preamble to the constitution,” he added.

Sivankutti also stated that the translation/language of the preamble to the constitution will depend on the medium of the books i.e. if the medium of the textbook is Malayalam, the preamble would be in Malayalam whereas, It will be in Tamil in Tamil textbooks and Hindi in Hindi textbooks.

Why Is The Preamble To Constitution Added To Kerala School’s Curriculum?

When the authorities asked the government of Kerala about the need to make the preamble part of the Kerala school’s textbooks, they said that the main objective of including the preamble in the school’s curriculum is to create awareness about the significance of the constitution among youngsters.

The SCERT director added that “though it may be tough for the children to understand the concept of the Constitution in the lower classes, they will be able to understand its basics by the time they come to at least the fifth standard”.

The former finance minister Thomas Isaac also supported the state government’s decision to include the preamble to the Constitution in the school’s curriculum of Kerela, stating that this step of the state government would communalise education.

“The updated curriculum will be gender-sensitive and also includes lessons on Pocso rules, democratic and secular principles, and scientific temperament will be provided. That is our response to attempts to communalise education,” he wrote on the social networking platform ‘X’.
