In addition, changes have been made to History and Sociology textbooks for Classes 7, 8, 10, and 11, however, the most important changes have been made to the chapter titled “Bricks, Beads, and Bones – The Harappan Civilisation” and in the class 12 History textbook named ‘Themes in India History Part-I.’
List Of Changes Made By NCERT In History Books
As per recent studies, the officials stated that a “correction” in some chapters of the History textbooks is required. These corrections emphasize the “unbroken continuity for 5000 years” of the Harappan civilization, research conducted at the Rakhigarhi site to rule out Aryan immigration.
NCERT has also removed the sentence “It appears that there was a break between the Early Harappan and the Harappan civilization, evident from large-scale burning at some sites, as well as the abandonment of certain settlements” to enhance the continuity.
However, the chapter on “Tribals, Dikus, and the Vision of a Golden Age” in the history textbook for class 6 discusses Birsa Munda’s resistance to “missionaries and Hindu landlords”. In this, the word Hindu has been removed from the books.
Our Pasts-II, a history textbook for class 7, includes a chapter on “Devotional Paths to the Divine” that includes information on the Nayanars. This chapter states that there were sixty-three Nayanars, including potters, “untouchable” laborers, peasants, hunters, soldiers, Brahmanas, and chiefs from various caste backgrounds.
NCERT has removed the term “caste backgrounds” from this phrase and substituted “social backgrounds.” In addition, an image of communal riots in the sixth chapter of the class 12 Sociology textbook (Indian Society) is also been removed by the authorities stating that the image is not relevant to students.
