Very soon we will see medical colleges will be training MBBS students in Yoga classes. National Medical Commission (NMC) has allowed introduction of Yoga as a part of MBBS course curriculum. The yoga training will start for the current batch of students who got admitted in the MBBS courses in February- March.

As per new competence-based medical education introduced by National Medical Commission of India from the session 2021-22, Yoga training will be provide to the undergraduate MBBS students during foundation course. In the latest circular issued by NMC, Students will have to attend a maximum of one-hour class every day for a period of 10 days. These classes will begin from June 12 every year to be culminated on the international yoga day, June 21 in all medical colleges across India.

The official circular released by the NMC read “all State Governments/UT’s, Universities, Medical colleges/institutes are requested to initiate immediate action with regard to introduction of Yoga Training Programme for undergraduate course curriculum from the current batch of MBBS students i.e. 2021-22 admitted in the month of Feb-Mar 2022”

The Medical Commission further provided directions to keep this trining programme organised and in a systematic manner. “In order to maintain symmetry in Yoga training programmes at all medical colleges in India, Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga under Ministry of Ayush has developed common Yoga protocol”.
The National Medical Commission has directed all the medical colleges/universities across the country to adhere to this common yoga protocol. For this ministry have provided protocol video resources and booklet containing the instruction & guidelines for the Yoga training programmes.
Competence based medical education (CBME) is introduced by NMC in the year 2019 with the aim of imparting medical education is to train graduates to efficiently take care of the health needs of the society. The traditional medical education system is based on a curriculum which is subject-centered and time-based. With introduction of CBME, NMC wants to impart skills like good communication, doctor patient relationship, ethics, and professionalism in addition to medical skills.
