Percentage V/S Percentile

Since the NTA UGC NET Result is displayed in terms of percentile as per the recent update, many candidates get confused. Given below is the difference between percentage and percentile, along with examples for the ease of the candidates.

Percentage refers to a proportion or fraction of a whole, expressed as a percentage. For example, if there are 100 apples and 25 of them are green, then the percentage of green apples is 25%. Percentages are commonly used to express the relative frequency or proportion of a particular value in a data set.

Percentile, on the other hand, is a measure of relative position within a data set. It refers to the value below which a given percentage of observations in a data set falls. For example, if a candidate scores 75th percentile in UGC NET, it means that their score is higher than 75% of the scores in the total number of candidates who wrote the test for that particular subject. Percentiles are commonly used in statistics and data analysis to describe the distribution of data and to compare individuals or groups.
