The University Grants Commission (UGC) has made a noteworthy announcement that any third- or final-year UG students enrolled in the choice-based credit system (CBCS) are eligible to extend their enrollment period by one year to pursue an honors or research degree.

According to UGC’s official tweet, to facilitate these courses, students are required to enroll in a bridge course, which will be chosen by the relevant university, and choose a college with a postgraduate center to study in their fourth year.
Students who enroll in the 4-year program will receive an undergraduate “Honours” degree with a focus on research, and their postgraduate (PG) program will last one year rather than two years.
Official’s Statement Regarding 4-Year Program For UG Students
UGC’s chairman Jagadesg Kumar Mamidala said that the program will help 91 independent colleges in Maharashtra that have chosen to start offering the four-year UG degree under the New Education Policy (NEP) in the current academic year too.
The director of higher education, Shailendra Devlankar, stated that all universities in the state currently have CBCS in their postgraduate departments. However, the students who scored a minimum of 75% marks in all 6 semesters are eligible to apply for the program.
The state government plans to implement the NEP in all colleges starting with the upcoming academic year. As a result, CBCS will finally be implemented, and students will receive the benefits under NEP.
Later, Kumar stated “Over 200 universities have successfully implemented the four-year undergraduate program, using their strong graduate programs and research capabilities. As a result, it is recommended that these colleges support the students to continue their education into their fourth year.
