About National Eligibility Test

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has entrusted the National Testing Agency (NTA) with the responsibility of conducting the UGC-NET test. This test aims to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for the positions of ‘Assistant Professor’ and ‘Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor’ in universities and colleges in India.

Since December 2018, the UGC-NET has been conducted by the NTA in a computer-based test (CBT) format. The awarding of the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and/or eligibility for Assistant Professorship is based on the candidate’s overall performance in Paper-I and Paper-II of the UGC-NET. Candidates who qualify only for Assistant Professorship are not considered for the JRF award. Those who qualify for Assistant Professorship are governed by the rules and regulations of the concerned universities/colleges/state governments, depending on the recruitment of Assistant Professor.

The UGC-NET test is conducted twice a year in June and December. To regularize the examination cycle post the COVID-19 outbreak, the NTA, with the approval of UGC, is conducting UGC NET December 2022 in February and March 2023. This exam will be conducted in 83 subjects at selected cities throughout the country.
