In a press statement, the DTF statement said that the UGC draft on foreign universities is peddling dreams at affordable costs. At present, public funding universities are lacking funds resulting in a slow but steady erosion of the quality of education.
“The increase in the cost of education will result in the exclusion of a large section of our society, especially the deprived which indicates empowerment through education. It will also result in a mismatch between the demand & availability of skilled workers” said the press statement.
DTF also emphasises how the government will not allow foreign universities to offer online courses recognising that they lack in quality. However, public universities are being ‘cynically’ pushed with online education to higher education.
This will not increase poverty in education but also undermine teachers’ roles & rights in the teaching & learning process.
The DU democratic teachers front calls for UGC regulations on the academic bank of credits & national credit framework.
Both UGC’s ABC system & credit framework allows a student to pursue up to 50% of their course through online teaching. These initiatives lead up to 70% of the student’s course being digital.
The government has further planned to start National Digital University (NDU) which will permit any courses fully online.
