UGC To Take Strict Action Against HEIs Ragging Cases: The University Grants Commission (UGC) notifies all the higher education institutes (HEIs) regarding the violations of the “Regulations on Curbing the Menace of Ragging in Higher Educational Institutions, 2009”.

UGC on 14 December 2023 issued an official notice concerning the national anti-ragging monitoring committee, that the commission will take strict actions against any kind of ragging in the institutes.

The college principal and registrar of the relevant institution will be responsible if any case of ragging is found in their institute, said the national anti-ragging monitoring committee.

According to NCRB data, there were 1 lakh 70 thousand 924 incidents of accidental deaths and suicides in 2022, with only 1.2% of those deaths being related to examination failure.

“All HEIs are required to step up an “anti-ragging” mechanism by way of adequate publicity through various mediums i.e. constitution of the anti-ragging committee and anti-ragging squad, setting up of anti-ragging cell, installing CCTV cameras at vital points, anti-ragging workshops, and seminar, updating all websites with nodal officers’ complete details, alarm bells, etc.,” states the official notice from the UGC.

Further, the official notice added that the anti-ragging committees are free to take surprise inspections in universities, bus stands, canteens, hostels, and playgrounds to reduce the ragging practices in the HEIs.

The committee also directed the anti-ragging committee and anti-ragging squads to put up no-to-ragging posters at all the ragging-related places to avoid ragging cases among the students.

“Any breach of these rules will be taken very seriously. If an institution fails to take effective precautions to avoid ragging & fails to act in line with these regulations, or fails to punish the participants of ragging incidents appropriately, then the UGC will take punitive action against it” stated the official notice.

It is to be noted that ragging is a criminal offence, student who is distressed due to ragging-related incidents are required to call the National Anti-Ragging Helpline at 1800-180- 5522 (24×7 toll-free) the authority will take strict actions against the culprits.
