New Regulation of 40,000 MBBS Seats for NEET 2024

According to the National Medical Commission (NMC), the implementation of new regulations is expected to reduce regional disparities in healthcare professional availability, and significantly improve the quality of medical education in the country.

NMC has stated that the country still has the potential to add approximately 40,000 MBBS seats, provided that medical colleges are distributed evenly.

NMC’s Guidelines for NEET UG 2024

When medical colleges admit students to MBBS courses, they must make sure that they follow the NMC Regulations by considering the specific factors called parameters given below.

1- Admission beyond the authorised intake capacity is not allowed.

2-To be eligible for admission to the MBBS course, candidates must meet certain criteria regarding age and qualifying marks. According to the Regulations on Graduate Medical Education, 2023, candidates must have completed 17 years of age on or before December 31st of the year of admission.

3- Additionally, they must have passed the qualifying examination (i.e. 10+2) and have qualified for NEET-UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) with the following scores:

  • General category: 50 % or above.
  • Physically Handicapped: 45% or above
  • Reserved {SC/ST/OBC}: 40% or above.
