The student was from Bharatpur’s Nadbai and came to Sikar six months ago to study for NEET. He was staying in a hostel in Udyog Nagar, where this unfortunate incident took place. The police officer in charge of the area, Surendra Singh Degra, said the student missed his coaching class that day.

When his roommate came back from the class, he found his friend was not opening the door so he sneaked inside his window. The hostel staff opened the door and found the student hanging from the fan.

Earlier on September 4, a 16-year-old NEET student from Karauli died by suicide in the same place. Another suicide case was reported on September 7, 2022.

There was no note left behind, so it’s not clear why this happened. The police have sent the student’s body for a medical examination, and they are still investigating.

This happened only a month after another 16-year-old student who was preparing for NEET died by suicide in Sikar, in the same area. These events happening so close together have made people very worried about the mental health of students who are studying hard for entrance exams.

Why NEET Aspirants Committing Suicide?

Rajasthan, especially Kota and Sikar, is known for many students who come there to prepare for exams like JEE Main and NEET UG. Students from different parts of the state come to these cities after finishing their 10th grade for coaching. But the pressure to do well in these exams can be really tough on these young students.

To deal with the increase in suicides in Kota and Sikar, a special committee led by Bhawani Singh Detha, the head of higher education in the state, issued some rules on September 27. These rules say that monitoring centres must be set up in both cities and if teachers at coaching centres break the rules and harm the students’ mental health, they can face legal action.

This sad happening shows that we need to take care of the mental health of students who are preparing for competitive exams. While good grades are important, the happiness and mental well-being of our young people are even more important.
