Alka Mittal Appointed as the first women to head ONGC

The oil & natural gas corporation (ONGC) appointed Dr. Alka Mittal as the company’s new Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), with this she has become the first woman to hold the top position in the Maharatna company. Mittal replaces Subhash Kumar who superannuated on December 31.

A post-graduate in economics and a doctorate in commerce, Mittal had broken the glass ceiling in ONGC by becoming the first woman to join the company’s board on November 27, 2018. Mittal has taken over the charge, and will superannuate in August-end.

“ONGC Director (HR) Alka Mittal has been entrusted with the additional charge of ONGC CMD, making her the first woman to head the Energy major,” ONGC said in a tweet. 

In 2018 Dr. Mittal joined ONGC where she worked as the director of human resources, and was also the first woman to hold the post of a full-time director on the board of ONGC. After Kumar ‘s retirement last year she has become the senior-most member in the Oil & Energy company.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas for entrustment of the additional charge of the post of chairman and managing director (CMD), ONGC to Alka Mittal, director (HR), ONGC for a period of six months with effect from January 1, 2022, or till the appointment of a regular incumbent to the post, or until further order, whichever is the earliest,” the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) said in an order dated January 3, 2022.

Earlier, the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) had interviewed nine candidates for the top post but didn’t select any one, opting instead to announce that it would set up a search committee to find a new CMD for ONGC.

As reported in India Times Energy giant ONGC will now be having two full time woman directors after government Public Enterprise Selection Board (PESB) selected Pomila Jaspal for the post of director (finance). Jaspal is currently director (finance) in ONGC’s subsidiary, Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL). 

Prior to joining as Director (HR), Dr Mittal held the post of Chief Skill Development (CSD) of the Company. She has a special penchant for training and mentoring, and has been instrumental in training over 11,000 Graduate Trainees (GTs) of ONGC since 2001 on “Corporate Governance” as part of their induction program.

“As a senior HR specialist, Dr Alka Mittal has made rich contributions in various professional forums and bodies. She is an Executive Committee member of NIPM (National Institute of Personnel Management), and was President of Forum for Women in Public Sector (WIPs) Northern Region till recently and heads the Women Development Forum of ONGC” read the official website of ONGC.
