The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has decided to revise the provisions regarding 100 MBBS seats per 10 lakh population across the states as per a decision by the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB).

NMC Notice On MBBS Seats Detailed Explanation

The NMC has suspended its verdict to restrict the number of MBBS seats in each state to a limit of 100 per 10 lakh population that was to start from the 2025-26 session.

The regulation on the reduction of seats for the MBBS course was made almost three months before the commission official decided to revise it.

This decision would have prevented the Southern states from expanding their medical seat capacities for the upcoming academic session.

According to the sources, the NMC regulation to limit the total number of MBBS seats to 100 per 10 lakh was reportedly made in order to ensure a balanced allocation of resources across the nation.

This limit would have enabled an additional 40,000 MBBS seats to be added in states with a deficiency of more than 70% population according to the new seats-to-population ratio.

The accord has caused a backlash from those states that have already surpassed this ratio, thus excluding them from further expansion in seats.
