CBSE’s Guidelines For SHRESHTA Scheme 2023: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Wednesday, 17 January 2024, issued a circular regarding the guidelines for the implementation of SHRESHTA scheme 2023 in all CBSE-affiliated private schools.

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE), under the Government of India, is running a Scheme for Residential Education for SC Students in High Schools in Targeted Areas (SHRESHTA) in the year 2022 and is going to continue till 2026.

The SHRESHTA scheme aims to provide residential educational opportunities for meritorious SC students (both boys and girls) in the CBSE’s affiliated private schools.

And, to apply to this scheme, both the schools and the students have to qualify for the selection round of the SHRESHTA scheme for the assessment year 2023-24.

CBSE’s Guidelines For Private Schools 

The CBSE guidelines issued to all the private schools affiliated by the CBSE include the eligibility criteria, selection process, number of seats, and entrance test details to apply for the SHRESHTA scheme.

  • The scheme is applicable only for private residential schools affiliated with the CBSE up to Class 12th and must be in operation for 5 years or more. It is to be noted that the school applying for the SHRESHTA scheme will have a pass percentage of 75% or more in class 10 and 12 in the last 3 years. 
  • Schools must have adequate infrastructure for admitting at least (10) SC students in 9th and 11th classes (together) and the school must be a residential one as per OASIS data.
  • The entry of students will be done in classes 9 and 11 till the completion of education up to class 12. 
  • As per the Deptt. of Social Justice and Empowerment (DoSJE), 3000 fresh students are selected under the Scheme through a national-level test NETS (National Entrance Test for SHRESHTA) conducted by the NTA every year. Whereas,  the allocation of schools is done by web counselling process, and the allocation of seats is done as per merit and choices of the students.
  • The list of residential private affiliated schools with the DoSJE is purely based on the OASIS data.
  • Schools must note that they are required to meet the scheme’s eligibility criteria while applying to the DoSJE. Whereas, if the schools have any consent regarding the scheme, they can convey their consent directly to the DoSJE.
  • The circular also stated that the selected schools, are not allowed to refuse to admit the allotted students and must adhere to the scheme guidelines.

The Guidelines issued by the CBSE also stated that, in case, the selected private school is having any problem in the selection of students, consent, seat allocation, funds, etc, they are required to correspond directly with the DoSJE as the scheme is owned and funded by the DoSJE, Govt. of India.
