Bihar Students’ Deaths Raise Concerns, What can be the Reason?

Bihar School Students Died Due to Cold Wave: On 26 January 2024, two students in Bihar’s districts Lakhisarai and Muzzafarnagar were reported dead during school hours as the state experienced extreme cold waves. 

Almost all the schools in Bihar’s districts are reopened, except Patna, in the cold weather conditions due to which many students have fallen sick and two heart-wrenching incidents have happened. 

As per the District Education Officer of Muzzafarnagar, Ajay Kumar Singh, “the school authorities are not forcing any student to come to the school and has also ensured that the parents send them fully covered in warm clothes”. 

Meanwhile, other DEOs and DMs opposed that the students were sick after being exposed to the harsh cold and mentioned that “even school assemblies are being conducted in the open which can be dangerous”. 

AISU Files Complaint to NCPCR On Student’s Death in Bihar

After the Bihar student’s deaths were reported, the All India Students Union (AISU) posted a tweet on their official Twitter handle complaining the National Commission of Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) about the incidents.

As per the AISU’s official tweet, a class 1 student in Lakhisarai’s Kajra Primary School died after falling sick during the morning assembly, the kid started vomiting and passed away during the treatment. 

In another incident, a class 6 student in Muzzafarnagar district was taken to the hospital after the school authorities sent him home due to severe shivering, the student died on the way. 

The AISU mentioned that the decision to reopen schools in such cold weather violates children’s rights and norms, and also asked for an urgent intervention from NCPCR to investigate the circumstances leading to these unfortunate incidents.
